PERIODONTAL MAINTENANCE
Maintaining Optimal Oral Health with Regular Cleanings and Care
Did you know that within just twenty-four hours, plaque left on your teeth can transform into hard-to-remove calculus (tartar)? It takes about 90 days for this bacterial buildup to reach harmful levels. While daily home cleaning helps manage plaque and tartar, certain areas require extra attention.
After completing your periodontal treatment, Dr. Mehmet A. Eskan or your dental hygienist will recommend regular maintenance cleanings (periodontal cleanings), typically 3-4 times a year. During these appointments, the depth of gum pockets will be assessed to ensure they are healthy. Plaque and calculus, which are difficult for you to remove daily, will be expertly removed from above and below the gum line.
Your maintenance cleaning appointment may include:
- Oral cancer screening: A thorough examination of the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, cheek tissues, and gums for signs of oral cancer.
- Oral hygiene recommendations: Personalized advice on oral hygiene aids like electric toothbrushes, special brushes, fluorides, rinses, etc., to enhance your home care routine.
- Teeth polishing: Removal of stains and plaque that brushing and scaling may not eliminate entirely.
Effective oral hygiene practices and regular periodontal cleanings are crucial for overall health and managing periodontal disease. Research has shown a link between periodontal disease and systemic conditions such as heart disease, low birth weight in babies, diabetes, and inflammatory diseases. By prioritizing your oral health, you’re also contributing to your overall well-being.
Schedule your next periodontal cleaning and evaluation to stay on track with your oral health goals and prevent potential complications associated with gum disease. Your smile and overall health are worth the investment in regular dental care!
